Cullman, Alabama · Est. by Bub

Bub said pull up a chair.
There's room.

BubVilla is the story of a black dog with no front teeth, the family who got adopted by him, four good horses, an old donkey, and a friend named Mr. Wiseman who taught us that you can be poor in money and still be wealthy in love.

A faith-forward, family-safe place for kids, parents, grandparents, Sunday-school classrooms — and anyone else looking for a porch.

01 ·About Bub

He's missing his front teeth.
It does not slow him down.

Bub is the one who started this. He's a black short-haired pit-bull-mix with the soul of a Sunday-school teacher and the schedule of a small-town deputy. At home he's all mama's boy — there's not a key Mommy Kim picks up that doesn't get him to the door. On the porch when company comes, he snaps into tough mode, because he doesn't want the wanna-be Bubs to see him soft. We've all seen the truth of him. Nobody's gonna whisper a word.

Bub's mission is simple. He wants the kids who don't look like the other kids — the ones with the missing teeth, the ones who don't learn the same way, the ones who got picked on this week — to know that God has a plan for them. He's a Billy Graham fan. He believes there is always hope in Christ Jesus. He believes you only have to ask the Lord into your heart and trust His promises.

Let the children come unto Me.
— Matthew 19:14

Other dogs wish they were Bub. They just don't have Miss Ashley.

Eight friends.
One porch.

Each one carries a virtue. Each one is real. Each one is welcome. (Coloring book, trading cards, and storybook coming — sign up below.)

Portrait of Bub the Boss

Bub the Boss

VirtueHope

The dog who adopted his family.

Bub is the one who started it all. He's a mama's boy at home and a deputy on the porch. He eats messy. He's missing his front teeth from a great escape. None of it slows him down. He says God has a plan for everyone, even the kids who don't look like the other kids.

“Let the children come unto Me.” — Matthew 19:14

Portrait of Miss Ashley

Miss Ashley

VirtueManners

Bub's assistant. He calls her Miss out of respect.

Miss Ashley runs the front desk at BubVilla. Bub is so polite to her he says "yes ma'am" and "no ma'am" every time. She helps friends, family, and visitors find what they need. Manners matter here.

Portrait of Mr. Wiseman

Mr. Wiseman

VirtueFriendship

Honoring Mr. John Alvin Eisom — U.S. Army, Vietnam veteran, friend to all.

Mr. Wiseman is modeled after Mr. John Alvin Eisom, a decorated U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War who cooked alongside Bub's grandfather in Nashville long ago. He went home to be with the Lord a few years back. Poor in money, wealthy in love. He grew his own greens and called them his babies. Mr. Wiseman rides shotgun with Bub to church and to visit friends who are feeling down — kind words, chicken nuggets, and milkshakes for everyone.

“Greater love hath no man than this…” — John 15:13

Portrait of Midnight Moonie

Midnight Moonie

VirtueJoy

Off-track Thoroughbred. Lost the race, won the joy.

Moonie's grandpa won millions on the racetrack. Moonie ran a few races himself and picked up a couple of second-place ribbons before he figured out the secret: the race was never really about winning. Now this 1,200-pound jet-black gentleman dances around the pasture, cheers his friends on, and greets the lady horses every morning with a polite nod — “Good morning, ladies. I hope y'all have a blessed day.”

Portrait of Mellow Maddie

Mellow Maddie

VirtueGentleness

Brown quarter horse. Rescued from poverty. Grateful.

Maddie was rescued from a hard place and brought home to a softer one. She's shy at first, but when children are gentle and parents say it's okay, she lets them pet her long mane and brush her beautiful hair. The quiet ones have the biggest hearts.

Portrait of Stitchy

Stitchy

VirtuePatience

Wild Mustang from the Devil's Garden. Patient trust, slowly earned.

Stitchy used to run free in the Devil's Garden out west, where wild mustangs still roam since they were turned loose years ago. The scar on her snout is from out there — no doctors to help. She came to live with Mommy Kim and Daddy Bub after her old owner kept her shut in a stall all day. She isn't ridden. She's a baby doll once she trusts you, but trust takes a long, long time, and one false move and it's gone.

Portrait of Sister

Sister

VirtueBelonging

Mommy Kim's first horse. Trained, kind, learns a little differently.

Sister is highly trained and can run like the wind. She also has to stay after school for extra help, because she doesn't learn quite like the other kids — and that's just fine. We are all made different and in the image of God. We are just as kind to folks with special needs as we are to anybody else. We forgive each other. We walk away from confrontation. The bully is normally hurting, too — they need our prayers.

“So God created mankind in His own image.” — Genesis 1:27

Portrait of Dexter the Donkey

Dexter the Donkey

VirtueWisdom

The elder. He's seen it all. He's still gentle.

Dexter is the wise old soul of BubVilla. He doesn't say much. He doesn't have to. Steadiness wins.

03 ·The Porch
Mr. Wiseman, Daddy Bub, and Bubby on the porch with chicken nuggets and milkshakes
Fellowship time, Cullman County · sunset, milkshakes, kind words.

For Mr. John Alvin Eisom.
U.S. Army. Friend to all.

Mr. Wiseman was modeled after Mr. John Alvin Eisom — a decorated U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War who cooked alongside Daddy Bub's father in Nashville, Tennessee, many years ago. He went home to be with the Lord a few years back. He was poor in money but wealthy in love. He grew his own greens and called them his babies.

Mr. Wiseman exists so children, grandparents, and everyone in between never forget that the kindest souls don't always have the biggest bank accounts — and that veterans like Mr. Eisom carried this country, fed this country, and loved this country well.

When Bub and Mr. Wiseman pull up to a friend's house and that friend is feeling down, they sit on the porch. Mr. Wiseman says, “Yes sir, the Lord's been good to me today.” Bub passes around chicken nuggets and milkshakes. By the time fellowship is over, everybody's smiling like Mellow Maddie when a gentle child brushes her mane.

The BubVilla porch will always have a chair for the friend who needs one.

“Just because you didn't win this race — never quit.
Celebrate everybody. We never know what someone's been through.”

— Midnight Moonie
